  • The best place in Winnipeg: Winnipeg Jets

    Winnipeg Jets

    Ice hockey
In 2011, Winnipeg once again became home to an NHL team after a Winnipeg-based group purchased the Atlanta Thrashers. The team resurrected the Jets name that had been used by two other Winnipeg-based hockey teams, most notably the city's former NHL franchise. The Jets play at the MTS Centre, built in 2004 and a first-class venue for hockey games and concerts, though small by NHL standards. The hockey season begins in October; the regular season ends in mid-April, followed by the Stanley Cup playoffs that run into June. Season-ticket packages, which sold out less than a week after being placed on sale, were priced between $39 and $129 per game. Single-game tickets are technically available, but are very hard to come by; 13,000 of the arena's 15,000 seats were dedicated to season tickets. As a result of the return of the NHL, the city's AHL (minor league) team, the Manitoba Moose, moved to St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
